The popularity of K-pop and "Korean style" hot pants have allegedly contributed to the spread of dengue fever, according to the Thai government, the Chosun Ilbo reported.
But unlike singer and comedian Shin Jung-hwan who just pretended to have the life-threatening tropical disease after a gambling spree in the Philippines, this is no joke.
Thai authorities are also worried about a "South Korean-inspired fashion craze for black leggings which could be putting teenagers at risk," AFP said.
"I'm worried about how people dress, especially teenagers," said Deputy Public Health Minister Phansiri Kulanartsiri, explaining that the mosquitoes are attracted by dark colours.
"The mosquitoes can bite through the leggings' thin fabric, so those who wear them are at greater risk of being infected with dengue."
The Thai government said that year to date, 90,000 cases of the infectious fever transmitted through mosquitoes have been reported in the country. And unnecessarily exposing more leg (or the wrong colored one) to the pesky insects could increase the risks to its terrible bites.
So even though its hot and humid in Thailand and K-pop is hot, hot, hot -- cover up those pretty legs, ladies!
